03/23/1999

Maker of Acticoat® dressings appoints leading burn-care doctor as medical director

EXETER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, U.S.A. - Dr. Michael Raymont, President of Westaim Biomedical Corp., today announced the appointment of Dr. Alan Dimick as Medical Director. Dr. Dimick will provide in-house medical expertise on the continued development of Westaim Biomedical’s burn-care technology and its practical applications.

The director of the University of Alabama Hospital’s Burn Center from 1970 to 1997, Dr. Dimick brings to Westaim Biomedical more than 30 years’ experience treating burn patients. Dr. Dimick has been president of the American Burn Association and the North American Burn Society, and is an expert both in the clinical aspects of treating burn patients and in the science of caring for burn wounds.

A graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine, and a general surgeon by training, Dr. Dimick was first drawn to the sub-specialty of burn care in 1963 when he attended the National Burn Seminar in Galveston, Texas.

“As one of North America’s premier burn-care specialists, Dr. Dimick brings a wealth of experience to Westaim Biomedical,” said Dr. Raymont. “He will be integral to the continued development of both our relationship with the burn-care community and Acticoat® products.”

Layered with nanocrystalline silver, the Acticoat® dressings provide a sustained release of silver, which has long been recognized for its antibacterial and antifungal properties. As silver ions are consumed, additional silver is released from the dressing to produce a long-lasting, effective antimicrobial barrier. As well as burns, the dressing can be used on graft and donor sites, chronic wounds (including pressure ulcers, diabetic ulcers, etc.) and post-surgical wounds.
